Shea Butter Recipes: Scrubs & Body Washes

Reduce the signs of aging and prevent dry skin with these shea butter-based scrubs and body washes.

Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter Body Scrub

Give thirsty skin a drink with this lightly-scented scrub. If a deeper exfoliation is desired, you can substitute salt for the sugar.


  • ¼ cup Shea Butter
  • ¼ Cocoa Butter
  • ¼ cup Almond Oil
  • ¾ cup Sugar (white or brown)


  1. Melt the shea butter and cocoa butter together in a double broiler
  2. Combine the butter mixture and almond oil in a large mixing bowl, then place the bowl in a large container of cold water
  3. Use a hand mixer to whip the mixture until it reaches a light and fluffy consistency; if mixture is chunky or hard to mix, add an additional tablespoon of almond oil
  4. Add the sugar to the mixture, stirring until it is completely combined
  5. Store the body scrub in an airtight container

Shea Butter and Salt Scrub

Perfect for relieving aches and pains, this shea butter and salt scrub will relieve stiffness and soothe sore muscles.



  1. Combine the olive oil and shea butter
  2. Stir the essential oils into the mixture until well combined
  3. Add the Epsom salt and stir until fully incorporated
  4. Store in an airtight container

Simple Shea Butter Sugar Scrub

Refresh your skin with this shea butter sugar scrub, which offers the perfect balance of moisture and exfoliation. For a scented scrub, simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oil.


  • ½ cup Shea Butter
  • 1/3 cup Olive Oil
  • 1/8 tsp Vitamin E Oil
  • 2/3 cup Sugar


  1. Beat shea butter in a large bowl until it reaches a creamy consistency, about 5 minutes.
  2. Gradually add the olive oil and vitamin E, beating until they are well incorporated.
  3. Stir in the sugar and essential oil, if desired
  4. Transfer the mixture to a lidded jar

Sweet Orange Body Wash

With a refreshing citrus scent, this body wash is the perfect way to wake up.


  • 1 tbsp Shea Butter
  • ¼ cup Aloe Vera Gel
  • ¾ tsp guar gum or 1 tsp xanthan gum
  • ¾ cup Unscented Castile Soap
  • 25 drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil


  1. Using a double boiler, melt the shea butter
  2. Add the aloe vera gel and stir well
  3. Use an immersion blender or hand mixer to incorporate the guar gum or xanthan gum into the mixture. The mixture will be foamy after mixing, but will settle after a few hours.
  4. Add the castile soap and mix well
  5. Allow the mixture to cool, then stir in essential oil
  6. Using a funnel, pour the body wash into a bottle and store at room temperature.

Vanilla Body Scrub

Vanilla bean not only smells fantastic, but it has antibacterial properties and contains time-fighting antioxidants. Use this scrub up to twice a week to slow down the signs of aging or reduce the appearance of acne.


  • 1 ½ cup Raw Brown Sugar
  • ½ cup Shea Butter
  • ¼ cup Coconut Oil
  • ¼ cup Raw Honey
  • 1 Vanilla Bean
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract


  1. Mix the brown sugar, shea butter, coconut oil, the scraped vanilla bean pulp and the honey
  2. Stir in the vanilla extract
  3. Store in an airtight container

Whipped Coffee and Brown Sugar Scrub

Get your coffee fix with this whipped scrub. Not only does it smell wonderful, but the coffee effectively tightens pores, removes old skin cells and protects the skin from free radicals. Improvements in your skin’s texture and appearance can become evident after just one use.


  • 1 cup Shea Butter
  • ¼ cup Coconut oil, melted
  • ¼ cup Olive Oil
  • ¾ cup Brown Sugar, free from clumps
  • 1/3 cup coffee, finely ground
  • 1 tbsp Coffee Extract
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract


  1. Prepare the shea butter by melting it in a double broiler, then chilling in the fridge for an hour
  2. Using a mixer, whip the shea butter at a high speed for 4-5 minutes, until it reaches a fluffy consistency
  3. Combine the coconut oil and olive oil, then slowly incorporate into the shea butter
  4. Add the coffee and vanilla extract into the mixture
  5. Gently fold the brown sugar and coffee into the mixture
  6. Transfer the scrub to a lidded jar
