Shea Butter Recipes: Mascara, Deodorants and More

From body washes to lip balms, shea butter can add healing vitamins and nutrients to every aspect of your health and beauty routine, but its benefits don’t stop there. Here are some specialized uses for shea butter.

Eczema Relief ButterBonus

With lavender and cedarwood essential oils, this eczema relief butter protects skin from bacteria and toxins, while alleviating the discomforts of eczema.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup Shea Butter
  • ¼ cup Coconut Oil
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 5-10 drops Cedarwood Essential Oil
  • 5 drops Vitamin E Oil

Instructions:

  1. Using a hand mixer, combine the shea butter and coconut oil
  2. Mix in the essential oils and vitamin E oil
  3. Transfer the eczema relief butter to a lidded container and refrigerate until it has cooled completely
  4. Store at room temperature
  5. Prevent flare-ups by applying a small amount of butter before bed, or after exposure to any foods or environmental elements that trigger eczema

Natural Mascara

This mascara, made with all-natural ingredients, will deepen the color and add fullness to your lashes. Free from chemicals and artificial ingredients, it is safe to use, will not flake off, and removes easily with soap and water.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp Coconut Oil
  • 1 tsp Shea Butter
  • 1 ½ tsp Beeswax
  • 4 tsp Aloe Vera Gel
  • 1-2 capsules Activated Charcoal (depending on color preference)

  1. In a small saucepan, melt the coconut oil, shea butter beeswax and aloe vera gel over low heat, stirring constantly
  2. Stir in the contents of the activated charcoal capsules
  3. Place the mixture into a sandwich bag and allow it to cool slightly
  4. Cut a small hole in the corner of the bag and insert it into an empty, sterilized mascara tube. Gently squeeze the mixture into the tube.
  5. Store the mascara at room temperate for 3-4 months

Probiotic Vanilla Deodorant

Combat odor-causing bad bacteria and regulate your body’s good bacteria with this probiotic deodorant. To ensure that the deodorant will not need refrigeration, be sure to buy a shelf-stable probiotic.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp Cocoa Butter
  • 1 tbsp Coconut Oil
  • 1 tbsp Shea Butter
  • 1 tbsp Beeswax
  • 2 ½ tbsp. Cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp Baking Soda
  • 15 drops Vanilla Essential Oil
  • 2 capsules Powdered Probiotics

Instructions:

  1. In a double boiler, melt and combine the cocoa butter, coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax
  2. Once the mixture has melted completely, remove from heat and gently stir in the cornstarch and baking soda until well-combined and dissolved
  3. Stir in essential oil
  4. Let the mixture cool in the refrigerator
  5. Once the mixture has cooled and has a thick, pudding-like consistency, quickly stir in the contents of the powdered probiotics capsules
  6. Pour the mixture into an empty deodorant tube and refrigerate until it hardens

Repairing Foot Balm

Repair cracked heels with this thick and luxurious balm. For maximum benefit, apply this balm in the evening before bed, and wear socks to prevent it from rubbing away.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup plus 1 tbsp Shea Butter
  • 2 tbsp Beeswax, grated
  • 2 tbsp Jojoba Oil
  • 2-4 drops Essential Oil of your choice

Instructions:

  1. Using a double boiler, melt the shea butter and beeswax
  2. Remove from heat, then stir in the jojoba oil and essential oil, mixing thoroughly
  3. Transfer the mixture to a lidded container and allow it to cool in the refrigerator
  4. Store at room temperature

Shea Butter Deodorant for Sensitive Skin

This simple deodorant recipe is gentle enough for sensitive skin. If the recipe is still too harsh, simply reduce the amount of baking soda you add to the mixture. This recipe makes enough deodorant to fill two containers.

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup Coconut Oil
  • 3 tbsp Beeswax, grated
  • 2 tbsp Shea Butter
  • 1-2 tbsp Baking Soda
  • 1/3 cup Arrowroot Powder
  • 5 drops Tea Tree Oil
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil (or essential oil of your choice)

Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan, melt the coconut oil, beeswax and shea butter over low heat; stir continuously
  2. Once melted, remove from heat and stir in baking soda and arrowroot powder
  3. Cool slightly, then stir in tea tree oil and essential oil
  4. Distribute the mixture among two empty deodorant tubes, then allow it to solidify in the refrigerator

Shea Butter Shaving CreamAfter Shave 75

Making your own chemical-free and all-natural shaving cream is easy. Follow this recipe and enjoy a close shave free from cuts and irritation.

Ingredients:

  • 2/3 cup Shea Butter
  • 2/3 cup Coconut Oil
  • ¼ cup Olive Oil
  • 15 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 2 tbsp Baking Soda
  • 5-10 drops Vitamin E Oil (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a double broiler, melt the coconut oil and shea butter together
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the olive oil
  3. Add the essential oil
  4. Stir the mixture well, then set it in the fridge until it solidifies
  5. Once the mixture has hardened, let it soften slightly at room temperature
  6. Transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl and add the baking soda and vitamin E oil
  7. Using a hand mixer, beat the mixture until it reaches a light and fluffy consistency
  8. Transfer the shaving cream to a lidded container and store in a cool, dark place for up to one month

Solid Perfume

The perfect handmade gift; solid perfumes are fun and simple to make, and can be customized to suit any scent preference. Experiment with different scent combinations to find a fragrance that is uniquely yours.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup Beeswax
  • ¼ cup + 2 tbsp Shea Butter
  • ½ cup Olive Oil
  • 1-2 tbsp Fragrance Oil of your choice

Instructions:

  1. Melt the beeswax, shea butter and olive oil together in a double broiler
  2. Stir in fragrance oil until well incorporated
  3. Pour the mixture into small jars or twist-up tubes
  4. Refrigerate until the perfume has completely solidified

Soothing Aftershave

Soothe sensitive, irritated skin, and provide protection against ingrown hairs and razor burn. Shea butter is the perfect base for a cream aftershave, speeding skin’s regeneration process and relieving discomfort.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup Coconut Oil
  • 6 tbsp Shea Butter
  • 2 tbsp Jojoba Oil
  • 20 drops Tea Tree Oil

Instructions:

  1. Using a double boiler, melt the coconut oil and shea butter
  2. Once completely melted, remove from heat and stir in jojoba oil
  3. Allow the mixture to refrigerate for several hours, until completely cooled
  4. Using a hand mixer, whip the mixture on highest speed for 6-10 minutes
  5. Add the tea tree oil, and whip for an additional minute
  6. Transfer to a lidded container and store at room temperature
