Shea Butter Recipes: Lotion Bars & Sprays

Calendula, Chamomile and Lavender Lotion Bars

Made with all-natural ingredients infused with beneficial herbs, these lotion bars are as beautiful and fragrant as they are beneficial. Soothe dry, irritated skin and enjoy soft hands, no matter the season.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup plus 1 tsp Olive Oil
  • ¼ cup plus one tsp Coconut Oil
  • 2 tbsp dried lavender buds
  • 3 tbsp dried chamomile flowers
  • 3 tbsp dried calendula blossoms
  • ½ cup Shea Butter
  • ½ heaping cup Beeswax, grated
  • 20 drops Lavender Essential Oil

Instructions:

  1. Combine the olive oil, coconut oil, lavender buds, chamomile flowers and calendula blossoms in an oven-safe dish, and place in a warm oven. Allow the herbs to infuse for 4-6 hours.
  2. Using a strainer lined with cheesecloth or an old tea towel, strain the oil out of the herbs. Discard the herbs.
  3. Add enough olive or coconut oil to the herb-infused oil to make ½ cup
  4. Melt the shea butter and beeswax in a double boiler
  5. Once the mixture has completely melted, mix in the oil, continuing to stir over low heat
  6. Remove the mixture from heat and allow it to cool at room temperature for 5 minutes
  7. Stir in essential oil
  8. Pour the mixture into silicone molds or muffin tins and cool in the refrigerator
  9. Once the lotion bars have completely cooled, remove them from molds, wrap them individually in wax paper and store at room temperature

Lotion Spray

Light and easy to use, this lotion spray is ideal for keeping your skin moisturized through the warmer months. To ensure precision and proper balance of ingredients, this recipe will require the use of a digital kitchen scale. This recipe makes 8 oz. of lotion spray.

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Safflower Oil
  • 0.5 oz Shea Butter
  • 0.1 oz Stearic Acid
  • 1 oz Cyclomethicone
  • 0.25 oz Dimethicone
  • 0.25 Rosehip Seed Oil
  • 0.25 Walnut Oil
  • 0.5 Hemp Seed Oil
  • 0.15 oz Essential oil, for fragrance (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Using a kitchen scale, measure the safflower oil and shea butter into a microwave-safe container. Microwave in 30-second increments at 50% power, stirring after each interval
  2. Weigh out the remaining ingredients, combining with the shea butter mixture and stirring well
  3. Using a funnel, pour the liquid into spray bottle(s)
  4. Shake well before each use

Quick and Easy Lotion Bars

These lotion bars are a convenient and mess-free way to combat dry skin. This recipe calls for only three all-natural ingredients, ensuring that it is gentle and safe for even the most sensitive skin.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup Shea Butter
  • ¼ cup Coconut or Olive Oil
  • 2 oz Beeswax

Instructions:

  1. In a double broiler, mix all of the ingredients together
  2. Pour the mixture into silicone molds and refrigerate until completely cool
  3. Once the lotion bars have cooled, remove them from molds, wrap them individually in wax paper and store at room temperature

Sweet Orange and Honey Lotion Bars

With a light and refreshing scent, these lotion bars use all-natural ingredients and have antibacterial properties. This recipe makes 5 lotion bars.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup Shea Butter
  • ¼ cup Coconut Oil
  • ¼ cup Beeswax
  • 1 ½ tbsp Raw Honey
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 6 drops Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Instructions:

  1. In a double boiler, melt the shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax
  2. Remove the mixture from heat and stir in the olive oil, raw honey and essential oil
  3. Pour the mixture into silicone molds or muffin tins
  4. Allow the lotion bars to refrigerate overnight
  5. Store in an airtight container at room temperature
