Shea Butter Recipes: Body Butters & Balms

Shea butter is a superb moisturizer with healing properties, making it the ideal choice for every skin type and ailment.

Bronzing Body Butter 

Give your skin a summertime glow with this hydrating, all-natural bronzing body butter. To achieve a lighter or darker body butter, simply adjust the amount of cocoa you add to the mixture.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Shea Butter
  • ½ cup Coconut Oil
  • ½ cup Olive Oil
  • 1-2 tbsp Cocoa Powder
  • 2 tbsp Finely Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Vitamin E Oil
  • 5-10 drops Peppermint Essential Oil

Instructions:

  1. Melt the shea butter and coconut oil together in a double broiler
  2. Once completely melted, transfer the mixture to a mixing bowl and allow it to cool at room temperature for 30 minutes
  3. Add the olive oil, cocoa powder, cinnamon, vitamin E oil and peppermint essential oil
  4. Beat the mixture with a hand mixer until combined
  5. Place the mixture in the freezer until it is partially solidified
  6. Remove from freezer and whip the mixture with a hand mixer until soft peaks begin to form
  7. Store the bronzing body butter in a lidded container

Lavender Body Butter

Lavender essential oil is widely used for its ability to relieve tension and induce sleep. Luxurious and lightly-fragranced, this body butter is perfect for dry, sensitive skin.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Coconut Oil
  • 2 tbsp Shea Butter
  • 16 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 6-8 drops Purple Coloring (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Place the ingredients into a bowl and beat with an hand mixer until well blended
  2. Whip at the highest speed for 5 minutes
  3. Transfer the body butter to a lidded container and refrigerate until it has cooled completely
  4. Store at room temperature

Magnesium Body Butter

Magnesium is used in 300 reactions of the body. It is essential for bone and muscle health, aids in weight loss, stabilizes blood pressure and promotes restful sleep, among a host of other uses. Unfortunately, 80% of tested adults displayed magnesium deficiencies. Because magnesium can be absorbed through the skin, this body butter is a highly effective way to both hydrate your skin and boost your magnesium levels.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup Magnesium Flakes
  • 3 tbsp Boiling Water
  • ¼ cup Coconut Oil
  • 2 tbsp Beeswax Pastilles
  • 3 tbsp Shea Butter

Instructions:

  1. Place the magnesium flakes into a bowl and pour the boiling water over them, stirring the mixture until the flakes have completely dissolved. Set aside to cool.
  2. In a quart-size mason jar, place the coconut oil, beeswax and shea butter
  3. Place the jar into a small sauce pan with 1 inch of water, and warm over medium heat
  4. Once the mixture has completely melted, transfer it to a medium bowl
  5. Let the mixture cool to room temperature
  6. Using a hand mixer or immersion blender, beat the mixture at medium speed
  7. Starting with a drop at a time, slowly add the magnesium mix to the bowl
  8. Beat the mixture well, until all the ingredients are completely combined
  9. Refrigerate the body butter for 15 minutes
  10. Using a hand mixer or immersion blender, whip the mixture until it reaches a light consistency
  11. Transfer the body butter to an airtight container and store at room temperature

Peppermint Bark Body Butter

Whether you are looking for a simple homemade gift for hard-to-buy-for loved ones, or you want to pamper your own skin, this body butter is the perfect cure for dry winter skin.

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup Shea Butter
  • ¼ cup Cocoa Butter
  • ¼ cup Coconut Oil
  • 2 tbsp Vitamin E Oil
  • ¼ tsp Peppermint Extract

Instructions:

  1. Combine the shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil and Vitamin E Oil in a double broiler and melt over low heat, stirring constantly
  2. Once all the ingredients are melted, stir in peppermint extract
  3. Transfer to a bowl and freeze the mixture for 20 minutes, until the mixture is solid but soft
  4. Using a hand mixer, whip on high speed for 5-8 minutes
  5. Transfer the body butter to a lidded container and store at room temperature

Whipped Shea Body Butter

This basic, all-natural recipe is well-suited for any skin type. To create a scented body butter, simply add a few drops of your favorite essential oil.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup Shea Butter
  • ½ cup Deodorized Cocoa Butter
  • ½ cup Coconut Oil
  • ½ cup Olive Oil
  • Essential Oils (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Melt the shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil and olive oil together in a double broiler
  2. After the ingredients are melted and combine, allow them to cool slightly
  3. Refrigerate the mixture until it begins to solidify, but is still soft; approximately 1 hour
  4. Using a hand mixer, whip the mixture for 10 minutes, or until it is fluffy
  5. If using essential oils to add fragrance, mix in 10-30 drops, depending on your scent preference
  6. Refrigerate for 15 minutes to set
  7. Transfer the body butter to a lidded container and store at room temperature
