DIY Shea Butter Recipes


Shea Butter was something that I have heard about but wasn’t sure if it was something I spread on my toast or if it was some kind of lotion.  So I starting researching about this wonderful Shea Butter that everyone spoke about and Boy was I Surprised when I learned what Shea Butter was and its Amazing Benefits.  I soon realized that this was something that I needed in my daily beauty and skin routine and I have never looked back on life without Shea Butter.

Shea Butter is a luxurious all-natural product, off white or Ivory color, and extracted from the African Shea Tree nut. The Shea Butter is a fat derived mainly from stearic and oleic Acid and is rich in emollients as well as Vitamin A, E and F.  It is a great moisturizer due to its quick absorption into the skin and immediately protects it and provides essential nutrients to the skin. Shea Butter is also used to prevent premature fine lines and wrinkles by using the essential fatty acids in it to increase elasticity and creating a softer and more even complexion.

There are tons of benefits from Shea Butter for the skin and hair. It can be used on pregnant women as well as children.  We have a DIY guide with 50 recipes using Shea Butter but we picked 10 of the recipes and wanted to share them with you as these provide great benefits for the skin along with all the benefits by using the essential oils and carrier oils in these recipes.


1) Cocoa Butter and Shea Butter Body Scrub

Give Thirsty Skin a Drink with this lightly-scented scrub.  If a deeper exfoliation is desired, substitute fine grain salt for the sugar. I use this all the time, year round to help my dry skin.  I use it more during the summer to help quench my skin!

Ingredients:cocoa butter and shea butter scrub

  • 1/4 cup Shea Butter
  • 1/4 cup Cocoa Butter
  • 1/4 cup Almond Oil
  • 3/4 cup Sugar (white or brown)
  • Airtight Glass Container /Jar


  1. Melt the Shea Butter & Cocoa Butter together in a double broiler.
  2. Combine the butters and Almond Oil in a large Mixing Bowl
  3. Place bowl in a large container of cold water.
  4. Use a Hand Mixer to whip until it reaches a light & fluffy consistency.
  5. Add the sugar or salt to the mixture and stir until all combined.
  6. Store your Body Scrub in an airtight container and apply daily


2) Lavender Body Scrub

Lavender Essential Oil is widely used for its ability to relieve tension and induce sleep. Luxurious and Lightly scented, this body butter is perfect for dry, sensitive skin. I have a hard time shutting off my brain at night so some nights I use this on my whole body in the shower and feel more calm, relaxed and ready to just enjoy the evening!



  1. Add all ingredients into a bowl
  2. Use a Hand Mixer to mix until well blended
  3. Whip at the highest speed for 5 minutes
  4. Transfer the butter mixture to a sealed container
  5. Refrigerate until completely cooled
  6. Store airtight container at room temperature


3) Basic Lip Balm

All-natural and Easy to make.  This lip balm will keep your lips moisturized throughout the year.  This recipe is for a basic non scented balm, but it would like to have this as a scented lip balm, simply add 8-12 drops of your favorite essential oil. My son and I are obsessed with lip balms and have them in all locations of our house, his school locker and our cars.  This is an easy one and great for kids to use as well to hydrate their lips.  This recipe will make 8 lip balms so you will be able to give some away or keep in all the various places where you use and need lip balm!

Ingredients:Lip Balm with shea butter


  1. Prepare the lip balm tubes by removing the lids and securing                  them together with a rubber band
  2. In a microwave safe bowl, microwave all the ingredients in 30 second                                                        increments at 50% power, stirring well after each interval
  3. Transfer the mixture to a measuring cup
  4. Quickly distribute the mixture among the lip balm tubes
  5. Refrigerate the lip balm and allow it to set before capping the tubes
  6. Once ready to use, enjoy as needed


4) Stretch Mark Cream

Whether you want to prevent stretch marks, fade old stretch marks or soften the appearance of C-section scars, this Shea Butter based stretch mark cream can help.  The combination of natural oils and essential oils rebuilds collagen, restores elasticity, stimulates cell regeneration and nourishes cracked and or broken skin. Who doesn’t want to hide their stretch marks?  Come on, most women have them so why not do what we can to minimize them?

Ingredients:Stretch Mark cream

  • 2 tablespoons  Shea Butter
  • 2 table spoons Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • 2 tablespoons Sweet Almond Oil
  • 2 tablespoons Cocoa Butter
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Beeswax
  • 1 tablespoon Vitamin E Oil
  • 20 drops Neroli Essential Oil
  • 15 drops Helichrysum Essential Oil
  • 15 drop Lavender Essential Oil
  • 10 drops Lemon Essential Oil
  • Airtight Glass Container/Jar



  1. Using a double boiler, melt shea butter, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, cocoa butter and beeswax
  2. Once all ingredients have completely melted, transfer mixture to a lidded container
  3. Let the mixture cool to room temperature
  4. When mixture is completely cool and solidified, stir it with a spoon until it reaches a creamy consistency
  5. Stir in Vitamin E oil and all essential oils
  6. Refrigerate until it is completely cooled
  7. Store the Stretch mark Cream at room temperature
  8. Apply 2 times a day or as needed


5) Eczema Relief Butter

By using Lavender and Cedarwood Essential Oils, this eczema relief butter protects skin from bacteria and toxins, while alleviating the discomforts of eczema. One of my good friends uses this recipe on her son and he has had great results and serious relief from eczema.



  1. Using a hand mixer, combine the shea butter and fractionated coconut oil
  2. Mix in the essential oils and Vitamin E Oil
  3. Transfer the eczema relief butter to a lidded container     and refrigerate until it has completely cooled
  4. Store at room temperature
  5. Use as needed


6) Natural Mascara

This mascara, made with all natural ingredients, will deepen the color and add fullness to your lashes. Free from chemicals and artificial ingredients, it is safe to use, will not flake off the lashes and removes easily with soap and water or using one of our all natural eye makeup remover recipes. Considering the fact that I am mainly Irish, my eyelashes are blonde, so this is a great way to add some color to my short and blonde lashes without having tons of chemicals on my lashes near my eyes.


Ingredients:                           Natural Mascara

  • 1 teaspoon Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Shea Butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon Beeswax
  • 4 teaspoons Aloe Vera Gel
  • 1-2 capsules Activated Charcoal ( depending on color preference)
  • Sterilized Mascara Tubes


  1. In a small saucepan, melt the fractionated coconut oil, shea butter, beeswax and aloevera gel over low heat, stirring constantly
  2. 2 Stir in the contents of activated charcoal capsules
  3. Place mixture into a sandwich bag and allow it                                                                                                 to cool slightly
  4. Cut a small hole in the corner of the bag and insert it into an empty, sterilized mascara tube
  5. Gently squeeze the mixture into the tube
  6. Store the mascara at room temperature for 3-4 months
  7. Apply as needed or for desired look


7) Repairing Foot Balm

Repair cracked heels with this thick and luxurious balm.  For maximum benefit, apply this balm in the evening before bed and cover your feet with socks to prevent the balm from rubbing off. With it being summer right now, our flip flop wearing feet would love this as a treat!

Ingredients:Repairing Foot Balm

  • 1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon Shea Butter
  • 2 tablespoons Beeswax, grated
  • 2 tablespoons Jojoba Oil
  • 2-4 Drops Essential Oil of your choice
  • Airtight Glass Container / Jar


  1. Using a double boiler, melt shea butter and beeswax
  2. Remove from heat, then stir in the jojoba oil and essential oils
  3. Mix thoroughly
  4. Transfer the mixture to a lidded container and cool completely in the refrigerator
  5. Store at room temperature
  6. Use as needed


8) Soothing After Shave

Soothe sensitive and irritated skin and also provide protection against ingrown hairs and razor burn. Shea butter is the perfect base for an after shave cream because it speeds up the skins regeneration process and relieves discomfort. I have used all kinds of after shave gels, creams and you name it and most irritated my skin more, so I tried this and am now obsessed.  I suffer from ingrowns and this has really helped with that issue on my legs and bikini area especially.

Soothing After Shave CreamIngredients:


  1. Use a double broiler and melt the coconut oil and the shea butter
  2. Once completely mixed, remove from heat and stir in the jojoba oil
  3. Allow the mixture to refrigerate for several hours, until completely cooled
  4. using a hand mixer, whip the mixture on highest speed for 6-10 minutes
  5. Add the tea tree oil and whip for an additional minute
  6. Transfer to a lidded container and store at room temperature
  7. Use as needed after shaving or the day after shaving to help with ingrown hair


9) Diaper Rash Cream

I dealt with many Diaper rash creams for my son in my day and realized that most of them are full of chemicals and this is a great and natural alternative for your precious little ones bottom.

Using simple and very common ingredients make this diaper rash cream a breeze to help soothe burned skin and protect it from future rashes.

Ingredients:diaper rash cream


  1. Place coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds
  2. Stir in shea butter into the hot coconut oil
  3. Using a hand mixer, whip the mixture until it is uniform in color and consistency
  4. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature
  5. Add Cornstarch to the mixture, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches the desired consistency
  6. Refrigerate the cream until it has cooled completely
  7. Transfer the mixture to an airtight container and store it at room temperature
  8. Use as needed on a babies bottom for a rash or to moisturize if needed


10) Paw Wax

Yes that is correct, Paw Wax. For those of you that have a furry friend that you love as part of the family, you may notice that the hot weather on the pavement is hot for their little paws or the cold winter weather can be freezing for their little paws.  This recipe is perfect for all dogs and cats and will protect their paws from the cold or the heat.  It can also be applied to help prevent or treat cracked paws.

Paw Wax for dogs and catsIngredients:

  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil or Sweet Almond Oil
  • Vegetable Oil ( to spray to prevent sticking product)
  • 2 tablespoons Fractionated Coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon Shea Butter
  • 4 teaspoons beeswax, grated
  • Airtight Glass Container / Jar



  1. Prepare muffin tins or molds by spraying lightly with vegetable oil
  2. Using a double Broiler, melt all of the ingredients while stirring constantly
  3. Pour the mixture into the muffin tins or molds and allow it to solidify in the refrigerator
  4. Store the wax bars in an airtight glass container/jar at room temperature for up to 2 years
  5. To use, apply to the pads of your pets feet before they are exposed to heat, cold or rough terrain
